Good morning,
I just awared the 5th grade class their 2 points from the "Beat the Teacher" game yesterday! These are the first classdojo points you guys have earned from the game. Hopefully in the future, you will continue to earn points (and not lose them!). The game works like this:

As you know, we are planting at Forest Park tomorrow! Please be sure to wear the following:
I am looking forward to the experience and I hope you all have fun! In a meeting I had with a parent the other day, they mentioned that in the past, I had give a study skills packet to former 5th grade parents. I usually wait until parent/teacher conferences because many of you are overwhelmed by the process of middle school but I have decided to post it a bit early this year. Hopefully this will help you out! We have officially finished our ITBS for the 2016-2017 school year! Yay! We will be doing a little bit of traditional classroom learning and then we will have time to watch a movie for a bit.
Also, grades are up to date. Be sure to get missing assignments turned in. Good morning parents and students alike! I just wanted to let everyone know that I have updated my grades! Every time I post a grade update, I get very excited because it means I am caught up! Now... it is only 9:24am so if anything is turned in after right now, it will not be in the grade book BUT as of 9:24am, grades are up to date! Proof below!
I wanted to touch base with you regarding testing tomorrow. I had a presentation last week that I shared with the students about testing strategies. We also took a few classes to take the practice test. I have prepared them as much as I can as a classroom teacher. This is where you come in! I have asked the students to be sure they get a good night sleep and eat a hearty breakfast (adding a little bit of protein will help them stay focused and full). Now, I would love for you to help them with those things but there are a few other tips that I would really like support on. I have done some research on the night before and morning of test prep. 1) in getting your child to bed early avoid screen time 2 to 3 hours before bed. I know this sounds silly but maybe try reading, doing puzzles, or playing a board game before bed. After "shutting down" for the night, I usually do a sudoku puzzle or read a book. Occasionally, I get my husband to play a game with me. 2) Wake up in plenty of time to take care of the morning route and get to school on time. If you regularly wake your child up, start waking them up a few minutes before you normally do (especially if they are like my kid and HATE getting out of bed and lay in bed as long as possible). If they wake themselves up, check on them to make sure they are actually moving. Getting up late is a sure fire way to stress someone out especially on important days like test days. It doesn't matter what I'm waking up for, if I'm late, I will be stressed out and/or won't get my entire routine in. I have a story about a half marathon race day that I woke up late for but I'll save that for another time. 3) Help them choose a healthy breakfast. In sure they know cookies aren't a great option but maybe they can't make their own eggs or they choose sugary cereal thinking that it is healthy. Just a little guidance will go a long way. 4) Get your child to school on time. Whenever you are late for a meeting, aren't you disoriented and unaware of what is going on? This is what happens when your child gets to school late. If it's past 8:10, the day in the classroom has already started. If it's after 8:20, the students have already moved classes so they are now disrupting classes by unpacking while teaching and learning is occurring. If they are switching classes, they may forget an assignment in their backpack or all necessary supplies and this stresses kids out even more (especially since I do not let them enter the classroom after they have left for class). On test day, getting to school on time is just as important, if not more important. These tests are all timed so if a student is coming in late, they will be disrupting the other testers who may be distracted by people coming in the classroom. What's worse if they will have to make up the test later on in the week or the following week. Note: If you child is coming late or leaving early for whatever reason (especially during testing week), can you please send me an email? During testing, it will keep me from having them start on a test but not have time to finish it because if they leave, they cannot come back to the test. 5) Please send a water bottle with your child. The longest test we have is only 45 minutes but during the test, I do not let children leave the classroom (unless their is an emergency) even if they are done because I don't want other kids to get distracted; it's also important for kids to look back over their test and answers if they finish before time is up. 6) Have your child bring a healthy snack for morning snack. I see many kids bringing cookies, bags of chips, and sometimes even candy! I always encourage them to choose healthy snacks but I am often ignored. A healthy snack will help them stay focused for the last half of morning testing. I usually bring Wheat Thins and Babybell cheese. Thank you in advanced for your support! I know your children will do great on this year's ITBS test. I will do everything in my power to create a classroom environment that is conducive to testing. Please let me know if you have any questions! If your parent would like to meet with me (or you would like your parent to meet with me), feel free to use this link to sign up for a time!
